Tucked quietly in Chongwe, Lusaka is an understated museum in terms of publicity and until a recent TikTok many of us have just passed by which is a shame because it is excellently laid out, very tidy and clean and hands down the best museum in Zambia at present. At first glance as you walk in, you do not expect the powerful portrayal of history, sacrifice and connection of the people involved in building the TAZARA Railway from three countries Zambia, Tanzania and China. The park stands as a reflective memorial to not only the lives lost during the six year construction period of the railway connecting Zambia and Tanzania but what it took and what they went through to create the connecting paths from encountering elephants, buffalos, lions, deadly mosquito bites and drinking dirty water because it was very hot and there wasn’t always a clean water source close by.

As you walk through with the guide, you find yourself reading the names, dates and inscriptions, all representing a life, a family, endurance and a story of international friendship. Each track being a gentle but firm reminder that progress often comes at a cost, one that should not be easily forgotten as we celebrate milestones because real people made it possible with their hard work. So go through and read about it and feel the silence because sometimes the quietest places have the loudest stories to tell.
